Research

  1. Utilisation of a 3D printed simulation training model to improve microsurgical training. Geoghegan L, Papadopoulos D, Petrie N, Teo I, Papavasiliou T.

A prospective cohort study was conducted using Konjac noodle model, bespoke 3D printed ackland clamps and video based assessment. 10 trainees were recruited and showed improvement using the UWOMSA (University of Western Ontaria Microsurgical Skills assessment) score. Presented WRMS 2022 (podium), In press PRS Global.

  2. Analysis of 110 consecutive Hand and Plastic trauma operations- does the ‘Golden Local Anaesthetic (GLA)’ improve theatre efficiency? A. Freethy, C. Hennessy, I. Teo, Tucker S.

A retrospective analysis was performed in Nov 2020, comparing lists whereby GLA first cases were present, versus lists that did not. 110 trauma cases (58% GA; 42% LA) were conducted averaging 3.67 cases/day. The average start time was 09:41hrs. The average GLA list start time was 09:27hrs and the average non-GLA list start time 09:53 hrs [∆ 26 mins, p<0.01]. This 26 minutes of unutilised time for each non-GLA list potentially equates to £644.02 lost. This simple model reflects a strategy that can be implemented to improve theatre efficiency. Presented at BSSH Oxford 2021 (Poster).

  3. Thumb carpometacarpal joint osteoarthritis- a systematic review. Teo I, Riley N.

We performed a systematic review of all published literature relating to thumb CMCJ denervation. We summarised the findings of 9 studies and concluded that there is a paucity of high quality data to form any clinically meaningful conclusions. Published JPRAS.

  4. Leg dominance in healthy volunteers. (2016) Teo I, Thompson J, Munnoch DA.

Cross-sectional study with recruitment of 100 healthy volunteers. We found the majority had clear lower limb dominance with the dominant leg being 5% larger in volume. This has implications for the treatment of lower limb enlargement diseases. Published Lymphology.

  5. Use of HIVAMAT with manual lymphatic drainage in the management of lower-limb lymphoedema and lipoedema. Teo I, Coulborn A, Munnoch DA.

Pilot study assessing efficacy of HIVAMAT (deep oscillation therapy) in reducing lower limb volume in 5 patients (3 with lipoedema, 2 with lymphoedema). Results analysed with volume measurement and HD ultrasound. Published Journal of Lymphology 2016.

  6. Risks associated with antidepressant use in plastic surgery (2015) Teo I, Song C.

I performed a systematic review of all published literature on the adverse effects of antidepressant use in the field of plastic surgery. I found that SSRIs are associated with an increased risk of bleeding but not to a significant extent. Published in PRS 2015.

  7. Wide-awake hand surgery (2012) Teo I, Lam W, Muthayya P, Alexander S, Steel K, Miller G.

Wide-awake hand surgery has been performed since Sept 2009 in Sheffield. I analysed complication rates and patient satisfaction in the first 100 patients and have presented my findings at BSSH and BAPRAS in 2011. Published by EJHS in 2012.

  8. Hand infections- how deep is the problem? (2012) Harvey J, Teo I, Thompson S, Winstanley T.

6-year retrospective analysis of all hand infections in Sheffield. Staphlococcus was the most common specimen and Flucoxacillin the most appropriate first line antibiotic. Good concordance when superficial and deeper swabs were cultured. Abstract published PRS.

  9. The Natrelle 150 reconstruction. (2011) Teo I, Azmy A.

Masters thesis: MSc in Surgical Sciences. Case series of McGhan 150 procedures with cost analysis. I have completed this MSc project and graduated with distinctions. Presented at the East Midlands Surgical Society meeting 2011 (runner up EMSS registrar prize) and ORBS 2011. Published in Plast and Aesthet Res.

  10. Substance Use in Medical Students. (2006)

I independently designed and distributed a survey to Edinburgh medical students. This showed 79% to be regular drinkers; 3.2% smoked tobacco regularly and 1.3% took cannabis regularly. 12.6 % had tried illicit drugs other than cannabis. Achieved 93% for this project.

  11. The Ugly Side of Plastic Surgery. March 2004

The media portrays a glamorous image of plastic surgery focusing on mainly aesthetics. I created a website aiming to give a holistic view of the work of plastic surgeons. This included trauma, burns, reconstructive surgery, potential risks and complications. This is available at: http://www.portfolio.mvm.ed.ac.uk/studentwebs/session5/65/index.html.
